In Barabás, the industrial hall that was built as an investment of the territorial action plan implemented in the framework of the Interreg Slovakia-Hungary program entitled “The Future in Hemp” was handed over in a ceremonial setting.

The ceremonial handover of the 630-square-meter production hall took place on December 1, 2022 in Barabás, which will house activities suitable for processing hemp stalks and provide work for several workers.

The investment project in Barabás is part of the cross-border economic development action plan launched in 2020 with the coordination of the Hungarian National Strategic Research Institute for the reconstruction of the industrial hemp farm in the Carpathian Basin.

The basic objective of the action plan is to reduce unemployment, create new jobs in the northeastern region of the Hungarian-Slovak border area, and use industrial hemp as a crop with long traditions that can be successfully grown according to ecological principles, in a modern, competitive and growing demand in several industries, e.g. in the food, cosmetic, textile, construction and health industries.

At the handover ceremony of the hall, speaches were given by: Jenő Szász, president of the Research Institute of National Strategy, dr. István Nagy, Minister of Agriculture, dr. Attila Tilki, Member of Parliament, and Gábor Daróczi, Mayor of Barabás. They all emphasized the importance of reintroducing fiber hemp. The participants were able to see the factory hall under the leadership of Bence Sarkadi, managing director of Érmellék Centrum Közösségi Nonprofit Kft.
